HEADLANDERS ROUND 1 – 01.02.09

HEADLANDERS  ROUND  1  -  01.02.09

We kicked off the year with a comp straight under the Lookout at Ballina.  The waves looked clean but
solid and for once, slowly improved through to the finals instead of dropping off like they usually do !
The guys in Hawaii and a couple of others with work commitments were sorely missed – hopefully
everyone will be back on deck for next time.
RESULTS WERE  :
JUNIORS  : OPENS  : DROPKNEE  :
1.  Daniel Vernon 1.  Ben McDonald 1.  Andreas Ebker-White
2.  Jimmy Martineau 2.  Daniel Vernon 2.  Ben McDonald
3.  Casey Robinson 3.  Axcel Frankland 3.  Travis Peters
4.  Sean Battersby 4.  Jack Cerne 4.  Joey McMahon
BEST SCORES  :
1.  Daniel Vernon – the new man from Yamba – made a big first impression scoring a perfect 10 in his
Juniors Semi.  His smooth but aggressive style gave the old members a bit of a scare so – Welcome
Daniel !!
2.  Ben McDonald and ” that Yamba Man ” Daniel Vernon had a great trade off in the Opens Final with a
Perfect Barrel Contest.  Daniel threw in a big barrel 8.5, then Ben was on the wave behind, took off
deeper and disappeared for what seemed a very long time, then shot out to complete it with a great
reverse spin for a 9. They both settled for a while, then threw in the same moves again for a 9 each on
the yellow flag.  Great contest and great to watch !!
WORST SCORES  :
We don’t usually comment on bad scores but Travis and Joey in the DK final deserved a mention.  We
actually thought at one stage that they were fishing out there but the Judges gave them both 1′s for
bobbing so well and keeping the bait fish and dolphins company.
Thanx Wally for supplying the culinary skills on the barby again and for the Dads who helped lug all the
equipment on an off the beach.
With some of our regulars back on deck and Daniel bringing up some Yamba boys we hope to have a good
show for our next comp on Februsry 29th.
Cheers – and don’t forget our new motto  :  ” We love Headies !

HEADLANDERS' KRISTIAN GERATHY IS CHAMPION

At the National Titles held in Port Macquarie Sepember 15th to 21st, our local
Kristian Gerathy cemented himself as Australian Amateur Champion in Opens
Division. After winning the Queensland Title in August, Kristian was super
keen for the Australian event. The Ranga took no prisoners – Number 1,
Number 1, Number 1.
What are his plans now ? He’s working out a list of what he wants to achieve
next year and of course Inverted Byron Bay will be giving him as much support
as they can. Perhaps, he can pull off Number 1 in the Australian Pro Tour !
Bodyboarding can only grow if new comers like Kristian begin the next
generational move to release the stronghold that the old crew has over the
Mags and DVDs. Inverted Byron Bay are the only sponsors and presenters of
Bodyboarding on the NSW Far North Coast and hope they can help promote
Kristian all the way.

COMP JULY 27TH, 2008.

July’s comp was held @ the Wareham Street entrance @ Suffolk Park. Pretty good
3 – 4 ft waves gave the guys some action considering that on Saturday arvo it was
just 5 ft whitewash everywhere.
RESULTS WERE :
CADETS / JUNIORS : 1. Tom Halvorsen
2. Jack Cerne
3. Casey Robinson
4. Dave Gallagher
OPENS : 1. Kristian Gerathy
2. Ben McDonald
3. Daniel Peterson
4. Brody Zagar
DROPKNEE : 1. Ben McDonald
2. Axcel Frankland
3. Matt Tyndale
4. Jessie Colbey
BEST EFFORT : The Juniors final was the highest average scoring heat of the day.
All 4 traded blow for blow with our cadet, Tom Halvorsen knocking over the front
running Juniors for today’s title. Top effort, Tom !!
BEST SCORER : Kenny, our resident South Park stand-in scored top points in his
1st heat which was a huge effort since he lost his flipper, came in and grabbed a
replacement and then returned to the water to finish with another high scorer.
Well done Brody – it was great to see you back having a go.
BIGGEST UPSET : It was great to welcome Matt Tyndale back after his stint OS
and he surfed like a champion in hisfirst DK heat. But somehow he went AWOL in
the final and allowed Mr Smartass Ben McDonald and Mr Cameraman Axcel
Frankland to overtake him, and of course, they strutted their stuff @ presentation
- sorry Matt !!
QUOTE OF THE DAY : This question from Neville Battersby was definitely worth a
mention. He had competed earlier in a DK heat and when he was putting on his
rashie to go out in his usual prone event, asked ” AM I LYING DOWN IN THIS ONE,
FRANK ? “ Poor Neville !!
Thanx again Wally for taking care of BBQ duties so confidently. Thanx also to Ryan
Wakefield for turning up with his dicky knee and judging all day – it was a great
help. And also another big thank you to Axcel, who is fitting into the position of
resident Photographer very well.
Cheers, Frank ……. invertedbyronbay@bigpond.com / ph 6680 7100.

COMP MAY 25TH, 2008

With the surf being 1 – 1.5 m at Ballina, the usual crew arrived yet again to knock a few heads. The banks at North Wall have all been sucked out providing only big thick waves about 50m from the end of the wall. So decision was made to all move around to Shelly Beach where the jusges hopefully could score some good waves. There turned out to be ample opportunity for big moves on the low tide !

CADETS / JUNIORS – RESULTS
1. Casey Robinson
2. Jack Cerne
3. Jimmy Martineau
4. Tom Halvorsen

OPENS – RESULTS
1. Kristian Gerathy
2. Josh Pollard
3. Ben McDonald
4. Casey Robinson

Good to see Neville Batters by back with his new Unknown prize board after a short break – a bit rusty but he’ll definitely stick it up the rest next time !

Best moves – what can I say ? Kristian Gerathy and Josh Pollard traded blow for blow every heat, both scoring 8s and 9s, but Kristian eventually coming out on top.

Boring moves – pretty much the rest of the crew ! No one looked like doing anything a lot of the time – scores were disaappointingly low. Casey Robinson averaged 5s and 6s and Ben McDonald through in one 9 in one of the earlier heats. Must say that watching the sausages cook was sometimes more exciting !

Thanx to Axcel for filming and we hope some good shots were captured for the Headlanders web site coming very soon.

Saturday night party time is playing serious havoc with the club. Guys either turning up with a F**K YOU attitide or not turning up at all is really starting to put a dampener on the whole thing. Come on Guys, follow the older ones’ lead and look sharp and ready to kick ass or we all may as well not bother at all. And it must be pointed out that the yellow flag is to let you know to paddle out – alert and eager for your heat – not prompt you to ask what colour you are then scratch your bum !

Next comp is on June 22nd and at Byron Bay if conditions allow. Sadly, If we don’t see a big improvement in both numbers and attitude, it may be our last so let’s see what we can do, hey ?

Cheers, Frank !
